Relevance, distance and prominence decide who appears in the Google Maps pack. Here is what each really means for your clinic.
When a patient searches “dentist near me” or “skin doctor in Vashi”, Google does not show random results. It ranks local businesses on three broad signals: relevance, distance and prominence.
Relevance: do you match the search?
Relevance is how well your profile matches what the patient typed. A complete profile with the correct primary category, a list of services and a clear description helps Google understand exactly what you treat.
Many clinics lose relevance because they choose a generic category or leave services blank.
Distance: how close are you?
Distance is measured from the searcher’s location to your listing. You cannot change where your clinic is, but you can make sure your address, map pin and service area are accurate, and you can build strong signals for the neighbourhoods around you.
Prominence: how well known and trusted are you?
Prominence reflects how established your practice looks online: the number and quality of reviews, mentions across the web, your website’s authority and how often people interact with your profile.
This is the signal you can influence most through steady work: reviews, content, links and consistent information everywhere.
What to do this week
Check your primary category, add every service you offer, upload fresh photos and ask your next five happy patients for an honest review. Small, consistent improvements compound.
